Rural Rising Philippines is a non-profit social enterprise transforming the way distressed agricultural harvests, smallholder farmers, and urban consumers are connected.

Founded by Ace and Andie Estrada, the organization emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of severe transport disruptions, when farmers were struggling to move their harvests to market while urban communities faced food shortages and rising prices. What began as an urgent response to a crisis evolved into a purpose-driven model for addressing some of the Philippines’ most persistent agricultural challenges: food waste, unfair farmgate pricing, inefficient distribution, food insecurity, and involuntary hunger.

At the heart of Rural Rising Philippines’ work is a simple but powerful principle: when farmers prosper, communities become stronger.

By creating direct links between farming communities and consumers, the organization helps reduce dependence on traditional layers of middlemen, enables farmers to receive more equitable compensation, and brings fresh, nutritious produce closer to families in urban communities.

Rescue Buys: Turning Agricultural Surplus into Opportunity Central to this model is the organization’s Rescue Buy program.

When farmers face financial losses because of oversupply, logistical disruptions, or limited market access, Rural Rising Philippines mobilizes quickly to purchase their produce — often at double the prevailing farmgate price. This intervention serves two purposes at once: it prevents valuable food from being wasted and provides farmers with much-needed income to sustain their livelihoods and prepare for the next planting cycle.

Rather than treating agricultural surplus as waste, Rural Rising Philippines turns it into an opportunity for shared value.

The organization then brings these rescued harvests into innovative consumer channels, including RuRiPop “Everything P99/kg” pop-up stores, RuRi Club membership shopping, and its Box-All-You-Can Fruits and Vegetables shopping experience, often in partnership with commercial retail hubs.

These programs make healthy food more accessible and affordable for consumers while creating a dependable market for farmers, demonstrating how logistics, retail innovation, and social impact can work together.

Building an Ecosystem for Corporate Sustainability
Rural Rising Philippines has also expanded its model beyond individual consumers to create meaningful avenues for corporate participation.

Through Office RuRiPop, Employee Veggie Subscription, and Company Rescue Buy, companies can directly participate in supporting farmers while incorporating sustainability, employee benefits and engagement, and corporate social responsibility into their programs.

Its work also extends into environmental conservation through Camp Mingan Nature Park, where forest and water conservation efforts include the protection of the Philippine Eagle and its natural habitat.

Together, these programs create a broader platform where agricultural livelihood, environmental stewardship, corporate citizenship, and community welfare reinforce one another.

Nourishing Communities Beyond the Marketplace
For Rural Rising Philippines, the journey does not end when rescued produce reaches consumers. The organization has cultivated a large and deeply engaged online community that connects people not only with affordable food, but also with the farmers who grow it.

Through short storytelling and consumer education, supporters gain a deeper understanding of the realities facing Filipino agricultural communities and the role consumers can play in creating a more equitable food system.

Surplus produce is also redirected to communities in need through its Food for the Poor program, including community pantries and community kitchens serving hungry urban families.

Through Free Food for Abandoned Animals, rescued produce is likewise shared with animal rescue shelters, extending the organization’s philosophy of mutual aid beyond human communities.

This creates a distinctive circular model: rescue the harvest, reward the farmer, feed the community, and reduce waste.

A Grassroots Model with Regional Significance
Recognition as the first Influential NPOs in Asia by the ACES Awards reflects the international significance of Rural Rising Philippines’ approach.

Rural Rising Philippines demonstrates that impactful non-profit leadership does not always begin with large institutions or conventional systems. Sometimes, it begins by identifying an urgent problem, mobilizing communities, and building practical solutions that work on the ground.

Its work contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 1 – No Poverty, SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.

More importantly, Rural Rising Philippines illustrates how these goals can be translated into tangible action: farmers receive better opportunities, consumers gain access to affordable food, agricultural waste is reduced, communities are nourished, and companies are given measurable ways to participate and contribute.
