Pioneering Grassroots Advocacy and Migrant Rights Protection

North South Initiative (NSI) stands as a dedicated social justice organization in Malaysia, working tirelessly to protect the rights of vulnerable communities, migrant workers, refugees, and marginalized populations across Southeast Asia. Founded on the principles of solidarity, equity, and human rights, NSI bridges community level advocacy with international policy frameworks. By operating directly alongside migrant worker networks, indigenous groups, and rural communities, the organization creates safe spaces for legal recourse, labor education, and social support. Through its proactive community presence, NSI addresses systemic labor exploitation, forced labor risks, and social marginalization at their roots. NSI has also been part of the ASEAN FORUM ON MIGRANT LABOUR (AFML) to ensure the issues are raised to all national leaders of South East Asia Member States. In 2025, NSI was recognised by Suaram as the shared winner of the 2025 Suaram Human Rights Award. We give great thanks to organizations like TENAGANITA, Diplomacy Training Program-UNSW, Pax Romana and the Bar Council of Malaysia for all the training and coaching to get to where we are today.

The NSI co-founder is also a recipient of the Old Putra Alumni(OPA) Merit Awards 2024 for his services to the association and society. OPA is the alumni association of the Royal Military College where Adrian Pereira graduated from in 1997.

Driving Cross Border Support, Legal Access, and Workplace Rights Education

At the core of North South Initiative’s award winning strategy is a commitment to direct, practical empowerment for marginalized labor forces. The organization builds cross border networks that connect origin and destination countries across South and Southeast Asia, ensuring migrant workers receive continuous support throughout their migration lifecycle. NSI conducts comprehensive paralegal workshops, rights awareness training, and emergency response interventions for workers in high risk sectors such as agriculture, construction, and manufacturing. By equipping workers with digital reporting tools and legal knowledge, NSI enables vulnerable populations to advocate for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity.

Empowering Inclusive Governance, Social Dialogue, and Community Resilience

North South Initiative operates under the firm conviction that sustainable social change requires active dialogue between civil society, corporate actors, and policy makers. The organization engages with supply chain assessments and remediations, multi-stakeholder initiatives, and international human rights bodies like the United Nations (IOM, UNODC, ILO) to hold business enterprises accountable to global ethical standards. Beyond labor rights, NSI leads community resilience projects, promoting environmental justice, gender equality, and youth leadership among refugee and marginalized communities. Through collaborative research and public advocacy, NSI transforms grassroot community insights into actionable policy recommendations for national governments across the ASEAN region. To date, we have helped return more than RM15 million in wages and recruitment fees to migrant workers in Malaysia.

Setting the Benchmark for Community Initiative Award

Earning the prestigious Community Initiative Award at the ACES Awards, North South Initiative demonstrates how a dedicated civil society organization can drive regional human rights advancement and social inclusion. Operating under transparent governance structures and grounded in grassroots solidarity, NSI balances immediate crisis intervention with long term structural reform. Through its synthesis of cross border worker empowerment, legal advocacy, and dedicated human rights defense, North South Initiative continues to set an extraordinary benchmark for community leadership and social stewardship across Asia.
