From Extraction to Regeneration
On the island of Obi in North Maluku, Harita Nickel is reshaping perceptions of what responsible mining can look like. The company’s integrated mining and processing operations are deeply committed to environmental balance. Its innovative High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) and Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technologies ensure that nickel extraction is conducted responsibly, with every byproduct viewed as an opportunity for regeneration rather than waste.
Nickel slag, once considered an industrial byproduct, has been repurposed into concrete materials used for roads, drainage systems, and coral reef structures. To date, more than 640,000 tons of nickel slag have been recycled for construction and community infrastructure, strengthening both the island’s resilience and its economy. A total of 2,092 artificial reef cubes coming from recycled nickel slag have been installed as of 2025. Also, we are using our recycled nickel slag as a soil ameliorant in our post-mining area to increase soil quality and support reclamation efforts. These initiatives demonstrate how industrial byproducts can be harnessed to create sustainable building materials that support long-term ecological restoration.

Driving Environmental & Community Innovation
Harita Nickel’s environmental stewardship extends far beyond production. Its advanced water treatment and monitoring mechanism ensures that mining activities do not release murky wastewater into the surrounding seas. Through its Dry Stack Tailings Management System, the company is significantly reducing environmental risks while reclaiming valuable land for future use. Until now, Harita Nickel has committed to rehabilitating more than 230 hectares of former mining and replanting thousands of mangrove trees to strengthen coastal biodiversity.
Through its “Obi Sehati” and “Salam Kawasi” community programs, Harita Nickel empowers local farmers, supports microenterprises, and promotes climate-resilient agriculture. By integrating local development into its sustainability goals, the company ensures that environmental progress translates into real socio-economic impact.
Building a Green Legacy from Obi for Indonesia
Beyond ecological achievements, Harita Nickel continues to invest in community infrastructure that uplifts lives. From new settlements, schools, and health centers to renewable power generation and integrated waste management systems, every project reinforces the company’s vision of creating a sustainable and inclusive future. The restoration of coral habitats around Obi Island, now home to 109 coral fish species, reflects Harita Nickel’s holistic approach to conservation, transforming mining-affected areas into thriving ecosystems.
Recognized by national and international bodies for its excellence in environmental and social innovation, Harita Nickel exemplifies how green technology and community empowerment can redefine industrial progress. Through relentless innovation and respect for nature, the company is not just extracting minerals—it is building a sustainable legacy that restores balance, nurtures livelihoods, and secures the planet’s future for generations to come.
Harita Nickel demonstrates its strong commitment to building a sustainable legacy through its adherence to several high-level standards, both those currently being pursued and those already achieved, such as the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP), and FTSE4Good.
