Restoring Oceans, Reviving Balance
For CPC Corporation, Taiwan’s largest energy enterprise, sustainability is not a slogan, it is a duty anchored in science and purpose. Beyond producing energy for millions, CPC is pioneering a new era of ecological guardianship through two landmark programs: the Yongan Coral Ark Project in Kaohsiung and the Shen’ao Coral Reef Survey Project in New Taipei City.
The Yongan Coral Ark Project, launched in 2023, has turned Taiwan’s first LNG terminal into a sanctuary of marine life. Working with marine biologists and ecological experts, CPC identified the Yongan terminal as an optimal site for coral conservation due to its unique environmental stability. By 2024, the company had successfully installed coral cultivation systems and transplanted 74 coral species and 220 coral colonies, including the rare Polycyathus chaishanensis, a protected species seldom found on Taiwan’s western coastline. Continuous environmental monitoring, coupled with laboratory research on the effects of light and temperature on coral health, has allowed CPC to mitigate bleaching risks and strengthen biodiversity within industrial zones.
The Shen’ao Coral Reef Survey Project, on the other hand, focuses on research and technological innovation. Situated in northern Taiwan, Shen’ao’s waters had long been off-limits to researchers due to port restrictions. Recognizing this gap, CPC collaborated with academic institutions to deploy AI-powered coral identification systems and deep-learning models, mapping substrate types and calculating coral cover rates across six major regions. This initiative marks a first in Taiwan’s coral conservation history combining artificial intelligence with ecological science to monitor reproduction cycles and spawning events. In 2024, CPC recorded ten coral spawning events and successfully documented the sexual reproduction cycle of Corallium japonicum, a critically endangered black coral species listed on the IUCN Red List.

Sustainability Through Science and Community
CPC’s marine programs are part of its broader vision of sustainable industrial cohabitation. The company’s environmental teams conduct continuous assessments to ensure LNG operations coexist peacefully with marine habitats. These findings are published in CPC Taiwan’s Ecological Tapestry: Exploring Hidden Gems, a 2024 book that showcases Taiwan’s rich biodiversity and CPC’s conservation achievements.
To foster community engagement, CPC hosted a national exhibition titled Discover the Beauty of CPC’s Ecology as part of its 78th anniversary celebrations. Featuring interactive coral tanks, underwater biodiversity zones, and educational exhibits, the event invited visitors to experience the wonders of marine conservation firsthand. Complementary initiatives such as beach cleanups, underwater net removal, and marine debris recovery campaigns were also carried out at CPC’s major terminals, empowering local communities to take part in ecological stewardship.
These efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals particularly SDG 14, Life Below Water. By investing in coral research, AI-driven ecosystem monitoring, and conservation education, CPC is leading a corporate transformation where innovation and preservation go hand in hand.
Leading the Future of Sustainable Industry
CPC’s leadership in sustainability extends beyond environmental impact, it embodies a reimagined industrial philosophy. The Yongan and Shen’ao projects serve as blueprints for Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECM) under Taiwan’s Ocean Conservation Administration, highlighting the possibility of harmony between industrial infrastructure and ecological regeneration. The success of these initiatives proves that corporate entities can serve as catalysts for environmental restoration rather than contributors to its decline.
Looking ahead, CPC plans to expand its coral transplantation network, introduce more species vulnerable to temperature fluctuations, and build Taiwan’s first marine biodiversity data center. Through continuous research and collaboration, the company is shaping a future where economic progress safeguards the planet rather than compromises it.
By redefining what sustainability means in the energy industry, CPC Corporation, Taiwan, has emerged as one of Asia’s Top Sustainability Advocates, a guardian of both progress and the oceans that sustain life itself.
