Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company

Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company (“Varian”), originated in 1948, founded by Russell H. and Sigurd F. Varian, among others. Initially, the company’s core expertise lay in high-tech electronics and microwave devices. Over time, Varian transitioned into the realm of medical technology, carving a distinct niche with its pioneering work in developing oncology solutions, including radiation therapy equipment and cancer treatment software. Siemens Healthineers recognized Varian’s invaluable contributions to the healthcare sector and acquired the company in 2021, positioning it as an integral part of Siemens Healthineers’ ecosystem.

Today, Varian operates from Palo Alto, California, with a specific mission:  to create a world without fear of cancer.. It specializes in delivering state-of-the-art linear accelerators, advanced software solutions, and treatment technologies that redefine the battle against cancer. But Varian’s vision extends beyond healthcare into sustainable innovation, embodying a commitment to eco-conscious technologies that mitigate environmental impact, elevate resource efficiency, and employ cutting-edge processes.

Along these lines, Varian has received the esteemed Green Innovation Award at the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES), recognizing its ground-breaking strides in sustainability and eco-friendly technology. This prestigious accolade underscores Varian’s dedication to developing products that not only advance the frontiers of healthcare technology but do so with a firm commitment to environmental responsibility. These innovations champion sustainability in the truest sense by reducing environmental impact, improving resource efficiency, and harnessing innovative technologies and processes.

Varian’s Halcyon radiotherapy system is a pinnacle of patient-centred care. This innovative platform simplifies treatment processes and optimizes advanced radiotherapy techniques, such as image-guided radiation therapy and RapidArc volumetric radiotherapy, with the aim of making radiotherapy more precise. Halcyon is designed for treatment efficiency, competently addressing a spectrum of cancers, including lung, prostate, breast, and head and neck. However, Halcyon achieves more by significantly reducing its carbon footprint, according to a case study from the Hull NHS Trust, aligning with Varian’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Halcyon exemplifies Varian’s steadfast commitment to innovation by extending its focus beyond radiation therapy treatments, incorporating advancements in energy efficiency, facility enhancements, and infrastructure improvements. These multifaceted initiatives not only underscore Varian’s dedication to sustainability and innovation but also demonstrate a profound commitment to enhancing accessibility to care, bolstering energy efficiency, and reducing infrastructure costs for the benefit of both patients and the environment.

The parent company, Siemens Healthineers, is dedicated to improving healthcare access while significantly reducing carbon emissions, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (“SBTi”), a global partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Siemens Healthineer’s goal is achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2030, aiming to cut direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions by at least 90% from 2019 levels. It is also committed to achieving a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions by 2030 throughout its value chain (Scope 3). Siemens Healthineers’ dedication to sustainability extends to its environmental, social, and corporate governance ratings, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and spurring a drive for continual enhancement.

Varian upholds a rich legacy of unwavering ethical standards. The organization prides itself on fostering a diverse, safe, and inspiring workplace that nurtures innovation and prioritizes safety. Varian recognizes the power of a vibrant and diverse workforce, which fuels creativity and drives positive change. Beyond the workplace, the company is deeply committed to giving back to communities and actively engages in various social initiatives. Varian’s contributions reach beyond immediate impacts, creating a lasting footprint that empowers regions and communities across the globe, underlining its dedication to ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible practices.
