about Suria Capital Holdings Berhad

A colossus amongst piers

The greening of the maritime industry.

Suria Capital Holdings Berhad, a Sabah-based listed company was established in 1983. It offers maritime services in the sectors of Port Operations, Bunkering Services and Seaport Passenger Gateway. It has also diversified into Property Development and Construction.

Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (Sabah Ports), a subsidiary of Suria Capital, operates eight major ports in Sabah and has undertaken numerous green initiatives such as the installation of electrified Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes, usage of LED lightings in line with its Green Port Policy and application of green technology as well as the implementation of the Autostore Terminal Operating System which minimizes paper consumption.

Sabah Ports, an APEC Green Port Award winner, has contributed to ecological conservation through initiatives such as seagrass transplanting, mangrove restoration and rehabilitation projects across the port locality. The company’s Green Port Policy emphasises on the applications of green technology to ensure appropriate management of energy resources, noise levels and sea-water quality at the ports.

The programme was developed based on major environmental factors such as energy and natural resources that may be affected by port operation activities and facilities. As part of SuriaGroup’s efforts to mitigate the negative environmental impact of its operations, the company has worked to promote the conservation of shorelines, mangrove and marine life.

Sabah Ports has also developed environmental initiatives like the Green Port Programme, which outlines strategies for the achievement of sustainable and environmentally friendly port operations. Additionally, the company has initiated an Environmental Monitoring Programme for the ports to comply with relevant environmental legislations such as the Environmental Quality Act (1974). The environmental monitoring programme monitors air, water and noise quality on a bi-annual basis. The sampling is conducted at pre-selected locations within the boundaries of the respective port vicinity. The results of the sampling are subsequently compared to local standards and guidelines to determine whether they are within the set limits.

Suria Capital’s efforts to build a sustainable future include a long-term Strategic Plan (2019 – 2023) that sets out specific directives and corporate plans. SuriaGroup’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes have greatly benefitted local community in Sabah, especially the under privileged rural communities in the interior of the state.

In recognition of its significant contributions to conservation, the UMS (Universiti Malaysia of Sabah) presented Sabah Ports with the High Impact University – Industry Engagement Award at the Academia Industry – Community Awards (AICA) in 2018. SuriaGroup has pledged to incorporate sustainability practices into its corporate culture as well, to achieve more for the benefit of the environment, surrounding areas and communities.

The company, which contributes to the State Government of Sabah in the form of periodic and annual dividend payments to the Sabah Ports Authority (SPA), serves as an economic catalyst to the State’s development and growth. In order to optimise the economic potential of the State, SuriaGroup has diversified its business into property and tourism-related developments.

The development and expansion of Sapangar Bay Container Port as a Transhipment Hub is projected to contribute significantly to the future development and sustainability of Sabah’s economy. Furthermore, SuriaGroup has plans to develop a dedicated international cruise terminal in Kota Kinabalu, supplemented with related residential, hospitality and commercial realties to serve as the home-port or regular port-of-call for regional and international cruise liners.

The development of the property project on a port land development which has been on-going, will be based on a low-density, low-rise model to preserve the water features, minimize environmental impact, and not to obstruct the view of the surrounding developments.

SuriaGroup, through its subsidiary SCHB Engineering, has also committed to collaborating with relevant departments at the State and Federal levels to move towards developing more renewable energy projects whilst ensuring the environment is not compromised.
