about Polyplex (Thailand) Public Company Limited

Striving For Better.

PET film manufacturer seeks to green its industry.

Polyplex (Thailand) Public Company Limited (PTL) was established in 2002 as a subsidiary of Polyplex Corporation Limited, India. Currently listed on the Thailand Stock Exchange, PTL focuses on the Asia Pacific markets and employs over 700 people in its manufacturing, sales and corporate operations. PTL also maintains liaison offices in Korea and Japan and has Sales representatives in all key markets to enhance market reach and service customers more effectively.

As a group, Polyplex is the sixth largest global integrated manufacturer of Polyester (PET) film by capacity with manufacturing operations in five countries (India, Thailand, Turkey, USA and Indonesia) along with several warehouses in Europe and North America. PTL’s manufacturing facility in Siam Eastern Industrial Park is located in Rayong, close to the deep-sea port of Laem Chabang in the Gulf of Thailand.

PTL aims to be a total packaging substrate solution provider for its customers while developing products with minimal environmental impact and providing the highest standards of health and safety to the workforce. The company has been continuously involved in developing sustainable products and sustainable processes, endeavoring to contribute effectively towards global initiatives around sustainability and a circular economy.

There have been growing concerns, in general, on the usage of single use plastics throughout the world. Flexible packaging is considered superior on various sustainability criteria vis-à-vis traditional packaging alternatives due to its inherent functional properties. The issue is of its recyclability, arising from lack of efficient and economic collection mechanism for post-consumer waste.

In response to this challenge, in 2013, a recycling plant was set up under its subsidiary Ecoblue Limited with the intent to have dedicated focus on development of new sustainable products using higher recycled content. Ecoblue provides sustainable solutions for film-based process waste (post-industrial as well as post-consumer) and was PTL’s first step towards such Green Initiatives. A new state-of-the-art recycling facility is coming up in Ecoblue that would cater to high-end applications in PET Bottles and Polyester Filament Yarn, supporting brand owners to meet their sustainability targets. PTL also invested in chemical recycling process whereby post-consumer PET bottle waste is converted to food grade Resin which is used with varying concentration in PET films. Polyplex has products in portfolio which have up to 90% PCR content. With ongoing investment to expand chemical recycling capacities in Turkey and Thailand, Polyplex leads the way towards achieving true circularity for Packaging.

As an organization, PTL is committed to continually improving its environmental footprint in order to have a positive impact on society, the economy and a sustainable future. In order to make its operations sustainable, PTL ensures optimum utilization of energy and other resources, waste management through recovery, recycle and re-use of material, reduction in emissions and effluents, enhancement of awareness amongst the employees through effective communication and training.

As further steps, PTL has come up with several projects focusing on CO2 footprint reduction. An example of a project focused on sustainability was an attempt to convert general packaging laminate structures from three layers to two layers, which basically contributes to both source reduction as well as CO2 footprint reduction. With this idea in mind, PTL now has a high barrier PE that is successfully being used in shampoo and detergent packaging, where it essentially converted a three-layer structure to just two layers.

PTL continually strives to reduce impact on the environment through new investments in energy efficient technologies, and also by developing sustainable sourcing solutions, be it higher recycled content, bio-renewable feed stock or enhanced local procurement of major raw material to reduce carbon footprint.

“The organizational strength of Polyplex lies in its leadership position as one of the world’s largest PET film producers. It is from this place of leadership that it is able to evoke change with the biggest trickle-down effect to the rest of the industry.”
