“The Road to Sustainability is Paved with Better Technology”
KOSSAN has the technology capability to redefine quality standards in purposeful rubber products.
Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd. (“KOSSAN”) was established in 1979 and registered in Malaysia. KOSSAN is a world-class manufacturer of latex disposable gloves and high-technical engineered rubber products. KOSSAN is committed to delivering an extensive range of innovative and reliable products for diverse market needs with solid manufacturing capabilities of advanced technologies.
KOSSAN’s Sustainability Policy, together with its Twelve (12) Sustainability Principles, were designed with the objective of “Creating Shared Value Through Sustainable Ecosystem”. The Twelve (12) Sustainability Principles are also embedded in KOSSAN’s day-to-day operations to ensure it safeguards its environmental stewardship, bring values throughout its social engagement and upholds the highest standard of governance practices.
Besides the broader Sustainability Policy, KOSSAN also has an Environmental Policy in place which is a key component of its Environmental Management System (“EMS”) Framework based on the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard. The EMS Framework contains six key components, which collectively, offers a robust approach to managing KOSSAN’s environmental impacts. The policy is shared and communicated with all employees, vendors and other relevant stakeholders outlining the best practices. At each of KOSSAN’s plants, specific personnel are responsible for ensuring that the organization’s actions in managing industrial effluents and hazardous waste (or scheduled waste) remain in line with local environmental laws issued by the Department of Environment (“DOE”).
Aided by the EMS Framework, KOSSAN carries out regular environmental assessments and audits that enable it to identify areas of non-compliance and formulate strategies to address these shortfalls. Environmental Aspect and Significant Impact (“EASI”) assessments are conducted on a regular basis. The results of these assessments guide KOSSAN’s formulation of targets and enable it to develop timely mitigation measures to counter environmental issues. Furthermore, guided by its Environmental Policy and the outcome of regular environmental data reviews, specific environmental targets are set to drive improvement in its performance. The organization’s progress against these targets is monitored by plant-level Environment Departments and reported directly to plant level Management, who then disseminate findings to Top Management at Group level. Employees are also communicated on the outcomes of EASI assessments conducted, empowering them to carry through any mitigation measures which have been earmarked.
Identifying the right stakeholders and engaging with them using the most meaningful manner is crucial to KOSSAN’s materiality assessment process. Its proactive and regular engagement approach enables it to gain valuable insights and perspectives on material sustainability matters that are significant to key stakeholders. This allows KOSSAN to prioritise its sustainability efforts in alignment with its key stakeholders to ensure continuous value creation.
In March 2023, KOSSAN successfully rolled out its Greening Value Chain (“GVC”) Programme previously launched by Bank Negara Malaysia (“BNM”). The GVC empowers its strategic small medium enterprise (“SME”) supply chain partners to achieve emission reductions as well as aiding the reduction of emissions across its value chain, through a carbon accounting solution, whereby they can measure their carbon emissions. By participating in the programme, KOSSAN’s suppliers become eligible for BNM’s Low Carbon Transition Facility (“LCTF”), which provides them with financing for capital expenditure that they can use to transition to low carbon and sustainable operations.
