“Putting Safety First for a Secure Future“
Acting Chairman and President Shun-Chin Lee makes work safety a priority at CPC Corporation, Taiwan to ensure a stable and trustworthy company that cares for people.
CPC Corporation is a state-owned petroleum, natural gas, and gasoline company in Taiwan that has served the country for more than 70 years. The company occupies 80% of the domestic market, covering the import and export, exploration, development, refining, storage, transportation, and sales of oil and gas, as well as the production and support of petrochemical materials.
Outside of Taiwan, CPC’s operations include joint ventures with international oil companies in eight locations spanning six countries, which allows it to offer more than 5,000 product items to its trading partners, transportation operators, industrial users, and livelihood users. Upholding a business philosophy of “Supreme Quality, Superb Service, and Selfless Contribution”, CPC consistently provides high-quality and value-for-money energy products to its partners and clients around the world.
Acting Chairman and President Shun-Chin Lee is synonymous with some of CPC’s greatest achievements in the past decade, having climbed his way up the ladder after joining the company as a Shift Engineer in 1980. Lee’s disciplined, hardworking, logical, and entrepreneurial spirit shined even during his early years with CPC. These admirable qualities led to his promotion to Plant Director of the Kaohsiung Refinery in 2010, Chief Executive Officer of the Refining Business Division in 2015, Vice President of CPC in 2017, and finally, President of CPC in 2018.
Since assuming the role of President, Lee has continued the efforts of his predecessors in leading CPC to maintain its AAA Fitch Ratings for 15 years, which is the highest possible investment grade that is reserved for exceptionally credible companies. In addition, CPC ranked first in terms of net profit of Taiwanese state-owned enterprises for three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019. Under his leadership, CPC has gained multiple awards and accolades as a trusted and outstanding enterprise. Lee has also picked up several leadership awards of his own to boot.
Being in such a high-risk industry, however, Lee’s career at CPC was not without its fair share of challenges. With the company’s oil refineries, oil depots, and gas stations located in the urban area while pipelines are spread all over Taiwan, he spared no effort to ensure a safe working environment by enforcing the company’s eight life guarantee clauses. To Lee, employee safety is of utmost priority. He is frequently quoted saying, “If there is no work safety, there will be no company.”
Led by Lee’s high standards of work safety, CPC completed the establishment of its process safety management (PSM) for the company’s five major business divisions to improve equipment reliability; reduce unplanned shutdowns and industrial accidents in light oil cracking; formulate emergency response drill plans; and strengthen accident response and disaster prevention capabilities. As a result, the cumulative number of CPC’s Occupational Disaster Index in 2020 successfully reduced to 0.33, as compared to the average number of 2.63 in the last 10 years before he took over as president.
As Acting Chairman today, Lee is also faced with the huge task of strengthening the company’s energy transition efforts in line with Taiwan’s carbon reduction commitments. Armed with the four core business concepts of CPC – safety, stability, innovation, and harmony – Lee is committed to leading the company towards making its greatest contribution to Taiwan’s economy and ecology. He aims to achieve these responsibilities through continuous investment in R&D and innovation, en route towards a diversified transformation for the CPC brand.
With Lee’s hard-earned recognition as the first corporate leader of Taiwan’s public and private enterprises to win the ACES Award for Outstanding Leaders in Asia, CPC stands as a beacon for other Taiwanese companies to seek international acclaim to boost the nation’s presence as well as their own reputation.
“Lee’s high standards of discipline and work safety as Acting Chairman and President have helped to build trust and harmony among CPC’s clients and employees, paving the way for a stable future for the company.”
