Samsung Electronics measures success not only by business achievements, but also by how well it serves the community and makes a difference in people's lives.
Samsung believes that it has social and economic responsibilities to the communities where it operates in. Its strategy for Corporate Citizenship is to deploy technologies and expertise to address some of the social issues of our time in areas including education, employment and health care.
Samsung aims to involve at least 30 per cent of its employees in Citizenship initiatives, and it has dedicated Citizenship teams in every country to drive these programmes.
The company also has a rigorous process to evaluate the relevance of its Citizenship initiatives. This process includes researching into local issues and evaluating existing initiatives, and understanding how Samsung can contribute and create a positive impact on local communities.
To help provide youth with opportunities for a better future and address the industry shortage of technical talents, Samsung has established the Tech Institute, a vocational training institution where young people can learn fundamental IT and engineering skills.
In Southeast Asia, Samsung Tech Institutes in Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia are partnering with educational partners to ensure that youth are given the best-in-class training environment and practical lessons, to prepare them for the workforce.
Samsung has also launched healthcare initiatives in many parts of the world, including China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, to support communities that lack sufficient medical technologies and trained staff which may lead to problems such as high infant and maternal mortality rates.
In Samsung SONO Schools in Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, Samsung works closely with hospitals and medical facilities, to provide equipment such as ultrasound systems, educational devices, electronic boards and large-format displays (LFD).
It also partners local medical associations and institutions to design a strong curriculum and operate courses for medical professionals in the area of ultrasound diagnosis, obstetrics and gynaecology.
In more than 70 countries, Samsung has equipped schools with smart devices to bridge the digital divide and help students take advantage of a smarter approach to education. In Southeast Asia & Oceania, Samsung is partnering with schools and libraries to build Smart Schools and Smart Libraries, which aim to create immersive learning opportunities for students through tailored education programmes as well as enrichment and infotainment content.
To nurture our youth in becoming future leaders, Samsung also organises programmes like Solve for Tomorrow in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia. The Solve for Tomorrow competition encourages students to leverage technology innovatively to address social issues and conceptualise solutions that will benefit the local community.
The competition is a reflection of Samsung's dedication in investing in the next generation by providing opportunities for young people to unleash their creativity and innovation for a good cause, while giving them the platform and resources to discover possibilities with technology.
As Samsung explores new business areas including health care, wearable devices, biotechnology, education, the Internet of Things and Smart Home, it continues to be committed to being a responsible global citizen to create positive change in the communities in which it operates.
